Mental health declining and feeling very stuck in the golden handcuffs
Hi all, this is a genuine dilemma and I’d appreciate an honest pov as I’m really struggling with my mental health.
I’m a 31F moved to Spain 4 years back with my husband 32M. We both work remotely, I’m in a niche corporate job, all benefits including generous leave policy, decent culture and a creative job. Insurance public and private and all expenses paid travel in eu when needed. I make around 90k/ year and moved with this job so please don’t come at me, I haven’t taken anyone’s job but I just pay my taxes here. For some reason I’m not under Beckham law so I pay a lot of tax. We’re debt free, live in a decent rented apartment and have saved enough and travel well.
The problem is my mental health is in the gutter. I went through severe stress manifestations on my body like full body hives and rashes, excessive flus and facial swelling and most days I feel like there’s an elephant’s foot on my chest during meetings. I used to get heart palpitations which are bettering and lip quivers while in high pressure meetings. Most of my days are blocked with meetings I dread, I’ve struggled to learn Spanish because my entire time goes in work and also chores, managing the house, cooking etc which I didn’t used to do in my Asian home country has been a very big change that still weighs me down. I’m feeling extremely burnt out and have been at this company for 7 years now. It’s sucked my creativity out dry but I’ve pushed because it paid bills but now it’s affecting my relationships and I’m questioning my entire existence.
Do corporate jobs ever become less soul draining? Why am I so scared to take the leap when I have no responsibilities and worse case scenario I can just go back home. I’m feeling very scared to take a break even though I know that’s why I need because I’ve had a rigorous studying and work routine since the age of 18 and I’m just so exhausted that the thought of another job kills me. Does it ever get better? Has anyone else escaped a corporate job in this economy and not regretted it. Will I be crazy to leave? Also I’m the more significant breadwinner but my husband would step up if needed so I’m not sure what my mind is stuck on!
