National identity isn't as simple as the far right pretends

Politicians like Santiago abascal and Alvise Pérez constantly talk as if Spain has a single, pure national identity that's supposedly under threat from immigration.

But that's not how history works.

The Iberian Peninsula has been shaped for centuries by Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, and many other populations. Modern Spain is the result of continuous cultural and demographic change, not some untouched civilization that suddenly encountered immigration.

That's why the obsession with deciding who "looks Spanish" or who supposedly belongs makes so little sense. There is no single Spanish appearance, and reducing people to stereotypes based on their looks is intellectually lazy.

Instead of discussing real issues like crime, integration, employment, or housing with evidence, it's easier to create an "us versus them" narrative.

A country confident in its identity doesn't need to invent a mythical version of its past to justify fear of its present.
